THE GROUNDS

Farmington Jiu-Jitsu Academy is excited to bring Jiu-Jitsu to Farmington and the surrounding areas! We have approximately 1,500 square feet of clean mat space. We offer opportunities to build friendships, earn new belt ranks, compete against others within the school, and join formal competitions against other schools. In addition to our mat space, we also have a waiting area for parents bringing their children, 2 changing rooms, and a 400 square foot space dedicated to strength training and physical conditioning.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is also known as the “gentle art.” Jiu-Jitsu focuses primarily on ground-based martial arts. The modern Jiu-Jitsu comes from Judo. Judo was first developed in 1882 in Japan by Kano Jigoro. The founders of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Carlos Gracie, Helio Gracie, and Luis Franca, were students of Mitsuyo Maeda in Brazil. They wanted to adapt the Judo style of martial arts to a technique that would not cause them to get hurt as often as they did in traditional Judo. It quickly became recognized as an effective form of self-defense against all opponents, even those who may have been bigger than the practitioner.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came to the United States in the 1970’s and was introduced to the public by the UFC in the early 1990’s. Jiu-Jitsu is more than just a self-defense art; it can help relieve stress, improve mental health, lower blood pressure, and even boost your confidence in everyday life.

WHAT TO EXPECT

We understand trying a new physical art can be nerve-racking; however, our instructors will allow you to work at your own pace and ultimately help you reach a great comfort level in your training and reach your personal goals in Jiu-Jitsu. We believe strongly that Jiu-Jitsu is for anyone! IF you are concerned about getting injured or walking away bruised and battered from your first class, have less worries! In Jiu-Jitsu, we focus on using hand-to-hand combat techniques without having to strike or kick our training partners. Many new people have joined our academy and have walked away with smiles galore and feeling accomplished with a fun and challenging workout!

Our GI & NO-GI classes will start with a warm-up, then move on to demonstrating and drilling techniques with a partner. Specific training or live training will be done towards the end of class to provide an opportunity to put the techniques into actual sparring sessions. After this, the class will end with a light cool-down. Extra training may be done for the next 30 minutes, or there could be other classes to attend.

The live training sessions we offer at Farmington Jiu-Jitsu Academy start with a warm-up, then move into a warm-up round. After this, participants will train for the duration of the class time. Finally, it will conclude with a light cool-down period. Trainees will conduct themselves properly while training with beginners. If there are any concerns, you may let the instructor know.

NOTE: Our Jiu-Jitsu school is competition focused. This means our classes may be harder for beginners and students from other schools. However, we strongly believe that anyone can still learn from bottom up as long as they are prepared physically and mentally.
